The Zimbabweans President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has commended Nigerian government over support and donation of relief materials to people of Zimbabwe affected by tropical disaster cyclone Idai that hit the country, recently.
Mnangagwa, who expressed gratitude when Nigerian government delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, visited him at the country’s state House in Harare, on Wednesday, stated that Nigeria had demonstrated most soothing definition of humanitarian and the move to rescue people of Zimbabwe from effect of the recently disaster that had hit the country, was appreciated.
He disclosed that Nigerian government had supported the country with numerous medicines and other materials expected to be shared among people who have suffered the devastation.
According to him, the bond between the two countries has been demonstrated through the support and assistance.
“We are happy that the leadership of Nigeria has realised that their brothers and sisters here in Zimbabwe visited by cyclone idai need assistance.
“And in my own view, this is a demonstration to the people of Zimbabwe a friendship and support from Nigeria which was a front line state during the struggle for apartheid.
“So, to the people of Nigeria, I say the people of Zimbabwe are extremely happy and grateful for the support they have given to us.’’
“Most of us in my generation were trained in Nigeria, and that is why we are now independent and Nigeria and Zimbabwe have come a long way.’’
Asides, Mnangagwa congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the recently concluded Presidential election.
“I am happy that my brother, and colleague has won election for the second term as leader of Nigeria.’’
Meanwhile, Onyeama, having sympathized with the president and Zimbabwean earlier, informed Mnangagwa of the relief items comprising medicines and medical equipment which were Nigeria token for people affected by the disaster.
“We are very humble to be received by His Excellency, I came to deliver on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari the sympathy of the Nigerian people.
“The gesture is a manifestation of fraternity and solidarity between our two countries and our people and I must say that we are overwhelmed by the warm reception by his Excellency.
“We are very humbled to be received by his Excellency and I consider Zimbabwe really my other home.’’
