Police kills six, arrests kingpin over alleged Omoku killings in Rivers

The Nigeria Police Force, said it has killed six and arrested a senior gang member, Okotubo Desmond, of the deadly kidnap for ransom and cultists syndicate over allegations that the gang was responsible for the gruesome killings of innocent people on 1st, January, 2018 in Omoku area of Rivers State.

It was gathered that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, Intelligence Response Team attached to the Joint Police Special Investigation Team engaged the suspects in their hideouts in Awara Forest boundary between Imo and Rivers State.

The shoot-out was said to have lasted fo several hours, which resulted to the death of six (6) suspects, while others were also said to have escaped with bullet wounds injury to other locations in Rivers, Delta, Imo and Bayelsa States, which the police teams were currently on their trail.

According to police, after the shootout, the IGP-Intelligence Response Team working on an intelligence information, further noticed that Desmond had escaped on 3rd January, 2018 to Abuja.

In a statement made available to journalists on Thursday through the police social media page, police force headquarters public relations officer, Jimoh Moshood, said that Desmond was trailed to Mpape in Abuja where he was arrested after serious resistance on the 9th January, 2018.

Moshood explained that Desmond confessed to be among those that masterminded the cruel killings of innocent persons in the area on New year day, even though his accomplice, Don waney, had been killed.

“This principal Suspect, Desmond Okotubo, 32s, is a Native of Egbenma from Unelga Local Government Area in Rivers State Confessed to be one of the masterminds of the gang and actively participated in the killings of innocent people in Omoku Rivers state on the New Year day,” police said.

The spokesman stressed that the suspect explained his gang’s modus operandi, at the same time, revealed how they had operated in Awara Town of Imo state before carrying out their deadly act in Rivers.

Moshood said that Desmond also revealed to the Police how their Gang leader, Don Wanny, gathered and briefed them on the night of 31st January, 2017, on how to carry out the attack on residents of Omoku town.

“Thirty (30) of them Armed with over Twenty (20) AK47 Rifles crossed the river from Awara to Omoku forest and proceeded to Omoku town and opened fire on innocent Citizens celebrating the new year,” moshood said.

However, the police noted that investigation had commenced to arrest other members of the gang who area still at large, in order to unravel reason behind the act, adding that the suspect would be arraigned in court on completion of investigation.
