Forbearance: of the attributes of the servant of the most merciful

In The of Name of Allah, The Beneficient, The Merciful  

Text being the second sermon for the month of Jumadal Ula, 9TH J. ULA/1439AH (26/JAN/2018CE)

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, Who says: (وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا) “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.” (25:63). We praise Him, thank Him, and we assert our belief in Him, and put in Him our trust. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls, and deeds.

And we bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone, the compassionate, the merciful, the oft-forgiving, and I bear witness that our master Muhammad is His servant and messenger. May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be on him, his household, companions and whoever follow their guidance and footsteps till the day of accountability.

As to what follows:

Dear Muslims, I advise you all and myself to fear Allah, the Almighty in accordance with the words of Allah thus: (يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا (70) يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا) “O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. ( 71 ) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.” (33:70-71)

Dear brothers in faith, this is the second sermon in the month of Jumadal ula, and we shall be discussing- Forbearance, as the second in our list of the attributes of the servants of the Most Merciful.

Dear Muslim brothers, we have been discussing the attributes of the servant of the Most Merciful as mentioned in the latter part of Suratul Furqan, we have elucidated the first quality, which was- (are those who walk upon the earth easily,) ( 25: 63).

Then Allah mentioned the second attribute which is (وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا) (and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.) (25: 63)
Their peculiar character with themselves is humility. They are humble, soft, humble, they are not overbearing, nor arrogant. “… none will show humility before Allah except that he is elevated.” (Muslim). Narrated Abu hurairah: “Charity will not decrease of the wealth, and Allah will not increase a servant that overlooks except dignity, …”

And their second attribute is their situation with people, especially with the ignorant ones, (وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا) (and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.) (25: 63)
They utter statement that will free them from sins, blame, and bad consequences. They do not respond to evil affront with evil, even if this is their right. Even where they are capable of taking two measures on one, or when they are able of responding two slaps with just one.

However, they do not preoccupy themselves with replying the ignorant and the lowly. (وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا) (and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.) (25: 63). They say the truth as it befits their status before Allah, as it fits their status with the hereafter, and as it fits what they stand for in the effort to support the religion and establish the truth on earth. (they say [words of] peace).

They say to them: “Peace be upon you” as Allah has said about a group of believers thus: “And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, “For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.” ( 28:55)

We have our way, and you have your, and we do not like go out of our way to walk in your way. This is the case of the servants of the Most Merciful. (وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا) (and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.) (25: 63). This kind of ignorance is not that ignorance which is the opposite of knowledge, but to a greater extent it is that kind of ignorance which is the opposite of forbearance.

The ignorant may have a high witness, he could be of high status, but he is ignorant in himself, of repugnant character. He may have a strong voice, or he might be a writer in the major newspapers, but he is ignorant and foolish, wagging his tongue and pen to soil dignity of the honorable people.

When these people address the servants of the Most Merciful they respond saying: (peace be upon you), they also say: Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.” ( 28:55) These are the ignorant as mentioned by one of the poets of the days of ignorance:
Ho one should act ignorantly against us, to make us react beyond the ignorance of the ignorant.
The ignorant, from the perspective of the Qur’an, is everyone who disobeys Allah- the Exalted, everyone whose desire prevails over the truth, everyone whose passion controls the mind.
Prophet Yusuf (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said when the women were to seduce him said about his soul: “… And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant.” (12:33)
Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, said when he ordered his people to slaughter a cow: “ … They said, “Do you take us in ridicule?” He said, “I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.” (2:67).
That is, to mock in situation serious of matter, and to speak with ridicule in truthful matters, this is the case of the ignorant.
As said by the Salaf, the ignorant is everyone who disobeys Allah and everyone with bad moral.
The true servants of Allah do not occupy themselves in a permanent battle with the ignorant.

The entire world is full of ignorant persons, therefore if someone preoccupies himself with them, his life will not be upright, he will not be able to perform his duty, and he will not have rest of mind; he get tired, engage in vanity, therefore they distance themselves from responding to those, even where they have the right to respond bad affront with like terms, but they forgive and forgive and say only the true, surely the vessel with content exudes and sprinkles.

It was said that Prophet Eesa (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by a group of Jews. They spoke evil to him but he said good things to them. And some said: ‘They spoke evil to you but you said good things to them’. And he said to them: “Everyone spends what he has”.

He who has had good spends the good, and those who do not have in their package but evil and filth spends evil and filth, and this is what the Arab poet said in ancient times:
We reign with pardon under our control, but when you reigned, blood flow with impunity.

This is the difference between us; the vessel with content exudes.
when the ignorant address the servants of the Most Merciful harshly they say word of peace. They purified their tongues from being contaminated vain speech. The tongue of the believer is worthy of being filled and connected with the remembrance of Allah, the Exalted by recitation of the Qur’an, praises and glorification.

As for the response to the ignorant, he purify their tongue from him, keen on his time .. so that his age is not lost in this falsehood.

Time is precious, it is like a sword, if you do not cut it, it cuts you, so it is worthy for the servants of the Most Merciful to engage their time with goodness, and to jettison vain talk.

Hence, it was one of the first descriptions of believers: ((1)Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (2) They who are during their prayer humbly submissive, ( 3 ) And they who turn away from ill speech) (23: 1-3)
They purify their tongues, they guard their times and lives, they guard their account of good deeds, their want it to be filled with good deeds, instead of incurring bad deeds.

They want to be among people of honour on the Day of Resurrection. In the hadeeth reported by al-Bayhaqi, Amr ibn Shu’ayb narrated from his father, from his grandfather: “When Allaah brings together the creations, a caller calls out: “Where are the people of honour? And the people gets up, they are few, and they move to the paradise. The angels meet them saying: “We see you in haste to the paradise, who are you? They say: “We are people of honour.” They say: “What is your honour? They say: “When we were wrong, we were patient, and when we were sinned against, we forgave, and when we were ignorantly affronted, we forbear. And it will be said to them : “Enter the Paradise, and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.” (Bayhaqi)
The servants of the Most Merciful Lord want to be among these people of virtue.
There are two ranks: the rank of justice and the rank of virtue or honour.

The rank of justice: To equate evil with its like. And the rank of honour: To be elevated above that, to equate evil with good, as Allah mentioned in the Qur’an thus: “And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

( 35 ) But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].” (41: 34-35)
If there are two ways: a good way and a better way, take the better way, and by the best means, with good word, beautiful action, and to provide service even to those who offended you: “Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.”

As he is a devoted friend, this is because man is enslaved by kindness. If you are kind to a person, your kindness makes him attached and closer to you as said thus:
Be kind to people, you enslave their hearts, usually, kindness enslaves a person.

A man came to Abdullah bin Abbas- may Allah be pleased with him and abused and trespassed against him, and Ibn Abbas looked at his grandson IkrIma and said: “O ikrima, see whether the man have a need to take care of for him? Then the man shook his head and went away.

A man attacked Ali Zaynul-Abideen ibn al-Husayn ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and he had his shirt on and he gave it to him, and ordered he be given a thousand dirhams. This is how the honorable and righteous people engage bad acts with good.

We ask Allaah to guide us in our religion, and to make us among the servants of the Beneficent: ” Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding..” (39:18)
