Ii The Name of Allah of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful,
Text Being Fifth Sermon For The Month of Jumadal Ula, 14th J. Thaniyyah /1439AH (2nd Match, 2018) delivered by The Muslim Congress (TMC).
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, Who says: (وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا) “Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; – and any that does this (not only) meets punishment..” (25:68).
We praise Him, thank Him, we assert our belief in Him, and put in Him our trust. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls, and deeds. And we bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone, the compassionate, the merciful, the oft-forgiving, and I bear witness that our master Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be on him, his household, companions and whoever follow their guidance and footsteps till the day of accountability.
As to what follows:
Dear Muslims, I advise you all and myself to fear Allah, in the open and secret, because that is the objective of all acts of obedience and commands and prohibitions. Allah, the exalted says thus:
(يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا (70) يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا) “O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. ( 71 ) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.” (33:63).
Dear faithful, this is the seventh meet in the month of Jumadal thaniyyah, and we shall continue our discussion on the Attributes of the Servant of the Most Merciful, taking the seventh attribute which is “Avoiding killing and protecting life, as elucidated in Suratul Furqan having discussed; humility, forbearance, Qiyaamul-layl (Standing for prayers at night), being fearful of the fire, Moderation in spending and upholding Tawheed.
Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, we are still within the vastness of the Qur’an with the servants of the Most Merciful whom Allah is pleased with and are pleased with Him in Suratul-Furqaan.
We earlier stopped at the attribute described as: (وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ) “Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, …” (25:68).
They do not invoke with Allah any other god, they do not worship any other god except Allah, they do not seek help except from Allah, alone, their slogan is: “Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.” (1: 5)
By this, they preserve the first objective of the message of Allah to His servants, which is the creed; the belief. However, the heavenly messages and the divine laws did not come to protect the creed alone, they have come to protect blood, life, dignities and honours, and to protect the intellect, the lineage and properties. From this point, Allah links this attribute with another attribute saying: : (وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ) “Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, …” (25:68).
The Qur’an connects killing with shirk (associating partner with Allah) due to the repugnance and enormity of this crime. Shirk is an aggression against religion, and killing is an aggression against life. Who are you that you would infringe against the life of others? This life is a trust in the custody of the person, how then you snatch it from others? Are you able to create a fly or mosquito that you would take the life of a believer with no just cause? Are you able to breathe a life in the smallest creature on earth? How could you dare to kill or spill blood?!
The religion came to prohibit blood spilling, it never permit for a man to assault other man without a just cause. Why would some people kill other people? Why would they kill innocent souls? The innocent soul is the life of the Muslim, or the soul of the Mu’aahid. He who says: “There is no god except Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” his blood and properties are protected, except with justice. truth. Whoever takes a pledge with the Muslims to commit to the covenant and peace from a Muslim leader, or contract with a Muslim, it is not proper to infringe on him.
Even every person that engages the Muslims peacefully and refrain from infringing against them, it is not acceptable to slay, as Allah says: “… Therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not, and (instead) send you (Guarantees of) peace, then Allah Hath opened no way for you (to war against them).” (4:90)
However, mankind, from time immemorial, have their desires override them to engage in killing one another for the reason a ephemeral worldly affair, or extraneous anger or out of envy, hatred or vying for any of the things of this world, or other things.
At the beginning when mankind was one family; consisting of a father and a mother and their children, this repugnant crime was committed, the killing by a son of Adam of his brother, as recounted in the Qur’an: And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], “I will surely kill you.” Said [the former], “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him]. ( 28 ) If you should raise your hand against me to kill me – I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.( 29 ) Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers.” ( 30 ) And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers. (Q5:27-30)
At the birth of humanity … at the birth of life, when man did not know how to bury the corpse of his brother, that was the first sinful crime on the surface of earth, Allah sent a crow to teach him how to bury the nakedness (disgrace) of his brother.
Right from long time ago, mankind have learnt aggression, he learnt evil, and it could be found among mankind an evil minded one who would kill his brother without committing any crime, and it could be found among mankind a righteous and humble Muslim who tells his his brother: ” If you should raise your hand against me to kill me – I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.” And it could be found he who his soul enticed him to kill his brother and he did.
There is no society that prepares for it the instrumentality to commit crime, as those who claim that criminals –all criminals- are victims of the society, and that it is the society that produces the criminal, and causes him to commit crime!! But the transgression of man against man is old, which crime is greater than aggression against life?
The Messenger was angered with this crime saying: “There would not be a life taken unjustly except that there will a burden of it on the first son of Adam because he was the first person who began killing.” (Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasaai, & Ibn Majah )
The Qur’an ended the story thus: () “Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.” (5: 32)
Islam do not permit a Muslim to kill a Muslim: () “And never is it for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake.” (4: 92). The Qur’an dissociates itself in strong terms from the killing of a believer by his believing brother, except where that occurred by mistake without intent, and it provided payment of a compensation and expiation for that: () “and a compensation payment presented to the deceased’s family [is required]” (4:92)
The expiation is freeing of a believing slave. As a man is slain, it strives to give life to another man, the Qur’an describes freeing of a slave as giving life, because being enslaves is equivalent to lower death, and freedom as a new life.
And whoever does not find [one or cannot afford to buy one] – then [instead], a fast for two months consecutively, [seeking] acceptance of repentance from Allah, this is the easy provision at this moment.
Those who kill by mistakes with their vehicles, some of them thinks it is enough for them to pay the diyah (compensation), or that the insurance company pays the compensation and that there is nothing on them after that, No, it is obligatory on him to fast for two consecutive months in seeking acceptance of repentance from Allah. If he breaks the fast after a month or fifty seven days, before the completion of two months, he has to start again, so that he will learn not to make jest with people’s lives.
Some of those who perpetrate this act, perhaps it may not be described as killing by mistake. Examples of such people are the crazily dangerous, who drive on the streets as if they are exhibiting their muscles (strength), these are people who do not walk on the earth in humility with their cars like the attribute of the servants of the Most Merciful. These are people who kill people, and end their lives. I do not think such killing is by mistake, and it is not to be considered from the angle of mistake, rather it is from the angle of aggression, and it imperative to penalized with a different punishment greater than the punishment of killing by mistake.
Why would a believer kill a believer? Is there anything in this world that could necessitate the killing of a Muslim of his Muslim brother? This world do not weigh up to the weight of the wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, how then could a human kill his Muslim brother because of it? It is imperative for him to protect him and strive his effort for him, why then would he kill him?
The Qur’an says: () “But whoever kills a believer intentionally – his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.” (4: 93)
Look at these great punishments: (his recompense is Hell), (wherein he will abide eternally), (Allah has become angry with him), (and has cursed him), (and has prepared for him a great punishment)
The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) says: “The termination of the world is more insignificant before Allah than the killing of a Muslim.” (Nisaai & Tirmidhi).
In another hadith: “If the people in the heaven and the earth conspire to spill the blood of a believer, Allah will throw them into the fire.” (Tirmidhi).
Ibn Majah reported that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) circumambulated round the Ka’bah and he said: “How pleasant is your scent! How great is you honour! By the One in whose hand is my life, the sanctity of (the blood of ) a believer is greater in honour than yours: his wealth, his blood, and that we think of him except good.”
The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Every Muslim is prohibited for every Muslim: his blood, property, and dignity” (Ahmad & Muslim).
He also said: “The believer is he who people are at peace with him in the wealth and lives.” (Ibn Majah, Ahmad, Ibn Hibaan, & AlHaakim).
How could it be conceived in the mind of a Muslim, after all these clear evidences, to stretch his sin to kill a man without a just reason? In the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud: “The first (thing) that will be decided among people on the Day of Judgment will pertain to bloodshed.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasaai and Ibn Majah).
That means that the first thing to be decided before Allah on the day of judgement are concerning bloodshed, lives, this is to show the enormity of this matter.
Some of the companions, and the scholars among the Salaf believe that there is no repentance for the killer due to the enormity of his sin according to a narration fron some of them thus: “A believer will not cease to be in vastness of his religion, as long as he did not slain a forbidden blood.” This means that the evil of his crime will make difficult his life.
Every sin, it is hope that Allah may forgive it except these two sins: the sin of shirk (associating partner with Allah) and dying as an unbeliever, and the killing of a believer without a just cause. In addition to this is accomplice in the killing. Ibn Majah reported that the Prophet (pbuh): “He who assisted in killing a believer with even half a word, will meet Allah written in between his eyes: ‘The despaired from the mercy of Allah.” (Ibn Majah).
Sufyan bn ‘Uyaynah, the narrator of the hadith said: half a word means to say an incomplete word.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, who says in the text of the verse: ” And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it.
Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.” (3: 103). May His peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, family, companions and all believers till the last hour.
Servant of Allah, one of the greatest calamity that befall this nation of Islam, weakening its strength, is that of disunity and segregation. Allah says: “O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful. And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (8: 45-46)
After the fall of the Ottoman empire, the fundamental project of the western Christian colonizing power was to divide the unity of Muslim, and to divide its nation into small nations in order to maintain their hegemony and imposition over her. Especially the Nigerian Muslims are in more need of unity especially at this moment we are preparing for election. When the Christian organisations and denominations, more than 180 organisations wrote letter to the federal government for inclusion into the nation’s election process.
Some of the means to achieve unity:
1- Sound knowledge of the religion
2- Sincerity and sacrificing effort.
3- Sound education and training
4- Cooperation in the areas of our agreement
5- Establishment of dialogue on the fiqh of differences
6- Discarding confusion on Islamic personalities and organizations
7- Implanting spirit of love and brotherhood in individuals and organisations
8- Scholars to stand up to their role in the society.
It is suprising today to see some Muslims claiming some other Muslims are not among the Ahlus-Sunnah wal- Jamaa’ah.
But who are the Ahlus-Sunnah wal- Jamaa’ah? Obviously as in the name, they are those that take hold of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) in word and action, and in faith, openly and secretly.
Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
