ASUU accepts INEC modalities, okay participation in 2019 General Elections

By Olawale Abdul-Fatah

Despite on strike over increase in salary and other benefits, Academic and Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accepted to participate in the forthcoming elections.

The acceptance was announced after a closed door meeting between the lecturers and officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Friday.

At the meeting, it was gathered that both parties discussed ongoing strike by the Union and how they could help save the country’s democracy through their participation in the election.

Earlier, the INEC boss said: We are concerned that the bulk of critical election duty staff are drawn from the universities. We are determined to ensure that processes are not affected by the Union’s industrial action.

“ASUU is a critical partner to the Commission in delivering credible elections. We look forward to the meeting and we are confident of a positive outcome.”
